Uncertainty is the enemy of any hostage situation.  What is a hero to do if they do not know the motive of a villain?  Is the baddie truly going to harm a hostage, or is it just leverage?  What we need to keep things from spiraling out of control is someone to think fast based on a villain’s past behavior.  We need a Bayesian superhero who forms beliefs with a single rule, making use of what they know to figure out what they need to know. No other type of hero is better at confronting uncertainty.
